Hit alluring trails of majestic Altai Mountains and trek highlights from immense Potanin glaciers at Altai Tavan Bogd to colorful 108 alpine lakes at Harhiraa. Dip in the oldest petroglyph arts along peculiar White River and admire dramatic backdrops of the Holy Five Peaks on Malchin Peak (4,050 m), including a sweeping view to the hidden treasures near the border of four countries – Mongolia, Russia, China, and Kazakhstan. Photograph famous eagle hunting culture and learn from the diverse culture of Kazakhs. Marvel at high Goojuur Waterfall and hike striking Yamaat Valley and scenic Otor Canyon.
Itinerary Details
Day 1: Welcome to Ulaanbaatar
Meet your travel crew and fellow travelers in Ulaanbaatar. Settle in your centrally located hotel and enjoy your free time following your air travel. Opt to indulge in the bittersweet history of Mongolia at the National Museum, which features exhibitions of dinosaur findings, history of Mongolia’s dynasties and empires, and socialism and modern era. If time permits, the option is yours to stroll through the city center. Gather for the reception dinner with your fellow travelers and guides. (3-star hotel, D)
DAY 2: Ulgii Town & Oigor River
Take a domestic flight to the most western city named Ulgii, capital of Bayan-Ulgii Province. Embark on a thrilling drive to the Oigor River. En route explore cultural sightings including petroglyphs, deer stones, and ancient burial mounds. (Community-based Ger Camp; B-L-D)
DAY 3: Tavan Bogd Basecamp
Trek 17 km of trail to the Tavan Bogd Basecamp along with a camel caravan carrying your bags and food supplies. Savor breath-taking vistas of snow-capped peaks and glaciers with foregrounds of verdant valleys. (Tents; B-L-D)
Day 4: Malchin Peak
Early morning, set off to an astounding 9 km trek to the imposing Malchin Peak (4,037 m), the smallest of the FIVE, to get sweeping vistas around the Holy Five Peaks of Altai Mountain range. In the evening, celebrate your conquering of Malchin Peak with your fellow adventure seekers under the brightly dazzling countless stars. (Tents; B-L-D)
Day 5: Khoton & Khurgan Lakes
Descend down 15 km trek to along valley of stunning White River and then take a panoramic drive to spend enjoyable stays at dramatic Khoton and Khurgan lakes. Stay in comfortable gers next to local nomad’s home. (Community-based Ger Camp; B-L-D)
Day 6: Eagle Hunters Inspiration Day
Stay in a community-based ger camp side by side to eagle falconer’s home, learning from their way of life. The family shows you how they train eagles to a strong hunter which can strike on wolves. Photograph authentic eagle hunters in their daily activities for your best memories from the west. (Community-based Ger Camp; B-L-D)
Day 7: Harhiraa Mountains: Yamaat Valley
Take a scenic drive to get Tel Mod in Yamaat Valley. Enjoy 3 hours of light walk to get breathtaking experiences of ancient petroglyphs and burial mounds in the backdrops of forested slopes, freshwater river, and rugged peaks. Based at our camp, each day we make short drives to trek core attractions the vicinity of Harhiraa Mountains. (Community-based Ger Camp; B-L-D)
Day 8: Harhiraa Mountains: Valley of 108 Alpine Lakes
Wander around stunning 108 alpine lakes towards the most scenic part Rashaany Am which has three lakes in different colors; first one is green; second yellow; third or the upper most red. Optional strenuous hike (2km) to the red lake which is located in the lowest part of permanent glacier with about 10m high and 30m wide. (Community-based Ger Camp; B-L-D)
Day 9: Harhiraa Mountains: Goojuur Waterfall & Grand Otor Canyon
Take a spectacular drive to get to fabulous Goojuur Waterfall which falls from 17 m high. Then enjoy a fantastic 4 hours of trek along the Shiver River rushing through the grand Otor Canyon where silence of the nature gets broken with watchful steps of audacious hikers. Day 10: Ulaangom Town & Uvs Lake
Drive to Ulaangom city and dip in what’s called ‘Culture of Chandmani’, which displays bygone burial mounds and cemetery from VII-III century BCE, found around a mountain, Ulaan Uul. Stay in a ger camp on the Shore of Uvs Lake. Enjoy eye catching panoramic landscapes that merged views of wide expanding River Delta and the biggest Lake of Mongolia against imposing snow-capped mountains. (Tourist Ger Camp, B-L-D)
Day 11: Ulaanbaatar
Transfer to Ulaanbaatar and stay in centrally located hotel. Shopping for world-class cashmeres and souvenir for home. (3-star hotel; B-L-D)
Day 12: Fly Home
Transfer to the airport according to your flight schedule. (B)
