Itinerary Details
Day 1: Welcome to Ulaanbaatar
Meet your travel crew and fellow travelers in Ulaanbaatar. Settle in your centrally located hotel and enjoy your free time following your air travel. Opt to indulge in the bittersweet history of Mongolia at the National Museum, which features exhibitions of dinosaur findings, history of Mongolia’s dynasties and empires, and socialism and modern era. If time permits, the option is yours to stroll through the city center. Gather for the reception dinner with your fellow travelers and guides. (3-star hotel, D)
DAY 2: Terelj National Park
Delve into the picturesque Terelj National Park which is officially named as Gorkhi-Terelj National Park. Walk the 108-steps of Aryabal monastery and trek to the nearby mountain to get birds-eye view of the Taiga. (Ger camp; B-L-D)
DAY 3: Hustai National Park
Travel to Hustai (officially Khustain Nuruu National Park) which is a successful reintroduction site for the last wild horse living in the native environment. As a result, there are now over 220 wild horses roaming in the area, where lies the panoramic rolling steppes of Mongolia. (Ger camp; B-L-D)
Day 4: Khugnu-Tarna National Park
Explore the peculiar natural formations of the Khungu-Tarna National Park (official name). The contrasting scenery of boulder-strewn rocky mountain, sand dune, and verdant steppe attracts myriads of travelers to the area. Immersing yourself in the heavenly environment, visit the Uvgun Temple located in the mountains. Trekking to the mountaintop and bird watching at the Burd marshland are also feasible. Horse and camel riding through the sand dunes would be a memorable experience for you. Nomadic families are always welcome to have you in their gers. (Ger camp; B-L-D)
Day 5: Kharkhorin (or Karakorum)
Unravel the mystery of the Karakorum which was once the capital of the Mongol Empire during 13th and 14th centuries. Take a guided walk in the 16th-century Erdene Zuu monastery admiring the architecture of the temples which house a wealth of valued artifacts. Then visit the soul-stirring Kharkhorin museum. Day 6: Orkhon Waterfall
Venture into the astonishing Orkhon Waterfall, which was formed by the volcanic eruptions. Scrutinize the cascading waterfalls and manage to take as many as photos you wish of this important geological site. You will also encounter some deer stones, petroglyphs, and different types of ancient burial mounds. (Ger camp; B-L-D)
Day 7: Tuvkhun Monastery
Embark on another scenic ride to the retreat of Zanabazar, who ordered to build a temple for a meditation refuge on the Mount Shiveet-Ulaan in 1648. Take a walk along narrow path to the top get birds’ eye view to the breathtaking backdrop. Enjoy meeting with the head lama at this aerie observing down below. (Ger camp; B-L-D)
Day 8: Tsenkher Hot Springs
Relax and soak up in the hot springs, and feel the healing charm under the supervision of the therapists. (Ger camp, B-L-D)
Day 9: Ugii Lake
Discover the fish and birdlife at the large freshwater lake Ugii and admire the picturesque scenery. Considering its importance for wetland birds, the lake was registered in the Ramsar Convention. Visit an information center located on the southern shore and be informed on geography, birds, fish, and flora of the lake. The most charismatic bird species at the lake include swan goose, Pallas’s fish eagle, white-tailed eagle, white-naped crane, Asian dowitcher, and white-winged scoter. You can also do boating, fishing, and horse riding. Taste the local food and the special fermented mare’s milk at nomadic family ger. (Ger camp; B-L-D)
Day 10: Ruins of Khar Burkh Balgas
Delve into the ruins of old city which was once inhabited by Khitans in 9 – 10th centuries. The types of stones they used to building fortress of the city are remarkable. Stay at a ger camp and hear the story of the ruins. (Ger camp; B-L-D)
Day 11: Ulaanbaatar
Take a panoramic drive to the Ulaanbaatar and check in your centrally located hotel upon arrival. Then set off to Central Museum of Mongolian Dinosaurs. If you are in the mood for shopping, go for the world-class cashmere and souvenirs for back home. Enjoy the fascinating folklore performance by Tumen Ekh Ensemble. (Bayangol Hotel; B-L-D)
Day 12: Fly Home
