Overview
The essential Gobi. Fly south to the Gurvan Saikhan mountains and walk the ice-floored gorge of Yolyn Am; climb the singing dunes of Khongoryn Els at sunset; and comb the Flaming Cliffs of Bayanzag, where the world's first dinosaur eggs were found. Nomadic hospitality and ger camps throughout.

Fly 2 hrs, then drive 1 hr
Fly to Dalanzadgad and drive into Gurvan Saikhan National Park. A gentle walk leads deep into Yolyn Am — a narrow gorge whose shaded floor keeps ice into summer, with lammergeiers nesting on the cliffs and pikas whistling from the scree.

A long, spectacular drive along the mountain front to Khongoryn Els. Climb the dunes for sunset — when the wind leans on the sand it truly sings — or take the hour's camel caravan and search the saxaul scrub for desert birds.

Drive 2–3 hrs
Famed for the first discovery of dinosaur eggs, Bayanzag glows furnace-red at dusk. Wander the sandstone badlands looking for bone fragments the wind has uncovered, and take in the view from the highest cliff tops.

An easy day back to Dalanzadgad, capital of the South Gobi, with its museum of local history, customs, palaeontology and geology.
