Overview

East of everything lies the Menen Steppe, one of the largest intact grasslands on earth. This journey crosses it: game drives among Mongolian gazelle whose herds can exceed a hundred thousand, the sandy shores of Ramsar-listed Buir Lake, and the battlefield memorials of the Khalkh River, where a pivotal moment of twentieth-century history played out.

  • Mongolian gazelle mega-herds on the open steppe
  • Buir Lake — sandy beaches and Ramsar-listed birdlife
  • The Khalkh River battlefields and Ikh Burkhant complex
  • Historic Choibalsan, capital of the east
  • A Mongolia almost no international traveler sees
  • Domestic flights both ways from Ulaanbaatar
