Every autumn the Kazakh eagle hunters of western Mongolia converge on Ulgii for the Golden Eagle Festival: a parade of embroidered kit and mounted hunters, eagles stooping to the fist from the mountainside, horse games and camel races. This journey gives you both festival days, a visit to a falconer's family at home, and the flights that make it effortless.

Day 2|Ulgii Town — To the Kazakh West
Fly 2 hrs
Fly to Ulgii, capital of Bayan-Ölgii — Mongolia's Kazakh province — and visit the local museum for the region's story. Festival anticipation fills the town.

Day 3|Eagle Festival — Opening Day
The festival opens with the parade of hunters in full dress, eagles on the fist. Judging of turnout gives way to the first calling contests — eagles released from the mountain to stoop hundreds of metres to their masters.

Day 4|Eagle Festival — Games of the Steppe
Day two belongs to the games: kokpar tug-of-war on horseback, tenge pickup at the gallop, camel racing, and the festival's climactic eagle contests. Stay for the awards as the light goes gold.

Day 5|An Eagle Falconer's Home — The Living Tradition
Spend the day with a falconer's family: how an eagle is taken as a nestling, trained, flown for a decade and released back to the wild. Return to Ulgii for a comfortable hotel night.
