Snow Leopard

October – April (cats descend with the ibex herds)

The ghost of the mountains. Mongolia holds the world's second-largest snow leopard population — around a thousand cats across the Altai and its sister ranges — and the open, treeless terrain of the west makes it one of the best places on earth to actually see one. Our tracking teams live in these valleys year-round, reading pugmarks, scrapes and the movement of ibex to put you on a ridge at the right dawn.

Where to see them

The Altai Mountains (Kharkhiraa & Turgen massifs) and the Margaz Mountains — both anchor conservation centers of the Wild Cats Valley corridor, where camera-trap lines confirm resident cats every winter.

Every sighting funds protection — our conservation work with the MUR Initiative.
