Snow Leopard Photography: Margaz Mountains

Day 1|Arrive in Ulaanbaatar — Winter Capital

Airport transfer, 1 hr

Arrival and transfer into the frozen capital. Over the welcome dinner your photo guide covers the plan — the territory's geography, cold-weather camera discipline, and what the rangers' camera traps have shown in recent weeks.

Day 2|Fly Uliastai, Transfer to Margaz Mountains — Into the Valley

Fly 2 hrs, then drive 4–5 hrs

Fly west to Uliastai and drive north-west into the Margaz massif, the snow deepening as the road climbs. Your ger camp sits below the tiers of broken rock the cats call home; the stove is lit, the scopes come out, and the expedition begins.

Day 3|Margaz Mountains — First Light on the Massif

The first full day establishes the rhythm: pre-dawn starts, long vigils at the vantage points, and constant reading of light against rock. While spotters sweep the slopes, your guide plans angles and backgrounds for the moment a cat is called.

Day 4|Margaz Mountains — Tracks in Fresh Snow

Winter is the honest season — every night's movement is written in the snow by morning. Following tracklines with the rangers often leads to the day's position: a kill site below a cliff, a saddle the cats cross at dusk. The camera stays ready from first light to last.

Day 5|Margaz Mountains — The Craft of the Long Wait

Serious cat photography is won by hours, not luck. Today is built around the most promising vantage — layered clothing, thermoses, lens hoods taped against spindrift — while ibex, corsac fox and bearded vultures keep the shutter warm between acts.

Day 6|Margaz Mountains — Working the Individual

By mid-expedition the team usually knows which cat is moving where. The approach becomes specific: this animal, this travel line, this light. When it comes together, you will have frames of a wild snow leopard in winter — photography's rarest prize.

Day 7|Margaz Mountains — Depth in the Territory

A day for the massif's farther valleys, or for returning to a proven position at a different hour. There is time for the wider story too — rangers at work, camp life under snow, the geometry of the range at dusk.

Day 8|Margaz Mountains — Final Day on the Mountain

One last dawn on the scopes and a final session in the gold hours. The evening ends with a farewell feast in camp and backup drives humming by stove-light.

Day 9|Return to Ulaanbaatar via Ulaangom — Out of the Snow

Drive 3–4 hrs, then fly 2 hrs

Drive north to Ulaangom and fly back across the country to Ulaanbaatar — showers, city comforts and a farewell dinner with the team.

Day 10|Fly Home — Departure

Airport transfer, 1 hr
