Snow Leopard Photography: Altai Mountains

Day 1|Ulaanbaatar — Kit Check in the Capital

Airport transfer, 1 hr

Arrival and transfer to your hotel, then a working dinner: the state of the territory, a frank talk about distances and light, and a kit check with your photo guide — batteries, layers, and how to keep glass frost-free at minus twenty.

Day 2|Altai Mountains via Ulgii — West into the Light

Fly 2 hrs, then drive 4–5 hrs

Fly to Ulgii and drive into the Altai, watching the landscape sharpen into photographic country — rock, snow and enormous sky. Camp sits within reach of the territory's best vantage points; the first golden hour is spent shooting the range itself.

Day 3|Altai Mountains — First Frames

Dawn on the scopes. While the spotters work the slopes, your guide works the plan: where the light falls at each hour, which bowls give clean backgrounds, how to be in position fast when the radio crackles. Ibex against the skyline keep the shutters busy meanwhile.

Day 4|Altai Mountains — The Territory in Depth

A full day following sign deeper into the range. Photography here is expedition craft: reading wind and light, moving quietly, waiting long. The rewards run beyond the cat — argali rams, golden eagles, and the graphic geometry of snow on black rock.

Day 5|Altai Mountains — Working the Encounter

When a cat is located — bedded on a ledge, moving along a travel line — everything becomes about the approach: distance, angle, heat shimmer, light. Your guide and the spotters position you for the cleanest possible frame, then leave the mountain to do the rest.

Day 6|Altai Mountains — Low Sun, Long Lens

The shoulder-season sun never climbs high, which means shooting light lasts most of the day. Camera traps checked with the rangers show which individuals are moving; the evening watch ends only when the last alpenglow leaves the summits.

Day 7|Altai Mountains — Final Day on the Territory

A last dawn vigil at the most productive vantage, then time for the frames that complete the story — camp life, the spotters at their scopes, the range in its widest panorama.

Day 8|Ulgii & Eagle Hunters — The Hunters of Bayan-Ölgii

Drive 4–5 hrs

Descend to Ulgii and spend the day with a Kazakh eagle-hunting family — golden eagles on the fist, embroidered kit, winter furs, and faces shaped by the west wind. Portraits, action and detail: one of the richest photographic days Mongolia can offer.

Day 9|Ulaanbaatar — Back to the Capital

Fly 2 hrs

A morning flight returns you to Ulaanbaatar — time to back up cards, and a farewell dinner with the team.

Day 10|Fly Home — Departure

Airport transfer, 1 hr

Airport transfer after breakfast. You leave with a portfolio very few photographers on earth can match.
