Grey Wolf Photography: Khomyn Tal National Park

Day 1|Arrive in Ulaanbaatar — Assembly

Airport transfer, 1 hr

Airport pickup and a first night in the capital. The briefing dinner covers the park, the packs the rangers have been following, and the discipline winter wolf photography demands.

Day 2|Fly Hovd, Transfer to Khomyn Tal National Park — To the Wolf Plains

Fly 2 hrs, then drive 5–6 hrs

Fly west to Hovd and drive east across the great lakes basin into Khomyn Tal. Takhi bands dot the plain as you approach camp — and somewhere beyond them, the packs are moving.

Day 3|Khomyn Tal National Park — Reading the Snow

Wolves write their nights across winter ground. The morning starts with fresh tracklines — pack size, direction, purpose — and builds toward positioning for the day's best chance: a rendezvous site, a carcass, a dune line the pack patrols.

Day 4|Khomyn Tal National Park — The Packs and the Horses

A day balancing the park's two great subjects. Takhi in winter coat against blowing snow are worth the journey alone; when a hunting pack tests a horse band and the plain erupts, you are watching — and shooting — wild drama very few people ever witness.

Day 5|Khomyn Tal National Park — Long Lens, Low Light

Wolf photography is won at dawn and dusk. Between the golden hours, work the supporting cast — corsac fox mousing in the snow, gazelle herds, rough-legged buzzards — and glass the poplars along the Zavkhan for anything moving.

Day 6|Khomyn Tal National Park — The Final Field Day

Everything the rangers have learned this week concentrates into a last long day with the pack. Evening brings the farewell feast, and the particular silence of a plain where wolves are singing somewhere beyond the firelight.

Day 7|Return to Ulaanbaatar via Altai — Out of the Park

Drive 4–5 hrs, then fly 1 hr

Drive south to Altai city and fly back to Ulaanbaatar — showers, edits and a farewell dinner.

Day 8|Fly Home — Departure

Airport transfer, 1 hr

Airport transfer after breakfast. The howling stays with you.
