Overview

This is the birding journey for those who want Mongolia's rarest specialities and wildest roads. After a capital-region warm-up it flies to Bayankhongor and goes overland: Khukh Lake's high steppe, sacred Otgontenger — the classic site for Hodgson's bushchat — the Bulnai forests, and the lake chain of the far northwest before finishing in the Altai. Seventeen days, one epic transect.

  • Hodgson's bushchat at Otgontenger — Mongolia's most-wanted songbird
  • A true overland transect of the Khangai and Great Lakes basin
  • Bulnai's forests: black-billed capercaillie and taiga owls possible
  • Bayan Lake and Uvs Lake reedbeds — white-headed duck country
  • Altai finale: snowcock, wallcreeper and high-mountain raptors
  • Tented and ger camps in country few birders ever reach
