Day 1|Arrive in Ulaanbaatar, Transfer to Gun Galuut NR — First Cranes

Drive 2 hrs

Straight from the airport to the Kherlen meadows: white-naped cranes on territory, swan geese overhead, and a gentle first evening after the long flight.

Day 2|Gun Galuut Nature Reserve — Wetland Morning

Dawn among the cranes and waterfowl, then the steppe margins for Amur falcon, Mongolian lark and wheatears. A strong opening list before the forest chapter begins.

Day 3|Terelj National Park — Taiga Edge

Drive 2 hrs

West to Terelj's granite valleys. Azure tit, Daurian redstart, and meadow buntings on every fence of the afternoon; owls sometimes call after dark.

Day 4|Terelj National Park — Forest Birding in Full

A whole day for the larch and birch forest — three-toed woodpecker possible, black-billed capercaillie with luck, and singing thrushes throughout. Raptors ride the crags by afternoon.

Day 5|Yolyn Am via Dalanzadgad — South to the Gobi

Fly 2 hrs, then drive 1 hr

Fly to Dalanzadgad and drive into the Gurvan Saikhan mountains. Yolyn Am's shadowed gorge keeps ice into summer — and holds one of Asia's great birding casts.

Day 6|Yolyn Am — The Vulture's Canyon

Lammergeier and Himalayan griffon overhead, wallcreepers flickering on the walls, Altai snowcock whistling from the rims at dawn, and Kozlov's accentor in the scrub — Yolyn Am at its May best.

Day 7|Khongoryn Els — The Singing Dunes

Drive 3–4 hrs

West along the mountain front to Khongoryn Els, the Gobi's greatest dune field. Evening brings sandgrouse to the springs and the dunes' deep hum when the wind leans on them.

Day 8|Khongoryn Els — Desert Specialists

The saxaul groves and gravel plains hold the Gobi's prizes: Henderson's ground-jay sprinting between shrubs, saxaul sparrow, desert warbler and desert wheatear — plus khulan and gazelle for the mammal list.

Day 9|Kholboolj Lake — North to the Lakes

Drive 3–4 hrs

Leaving the dunes, the route crosses to the desert lake chain. Kholboolj's shallows gather shorebirds on passage; evening light turns the whole basin to brass.

Day 10|Buuntsagaan Lake — The Great Desert Lake

Drive 2–3 hrs

On to Böön Tsagaan — the Valley of the Lakes' crown jewel. Pallas's fish eagles patrol the deltas, bar-headed geese raft offshore, and the reed fringe hides crakes and bearded reedlings.

Day 11|Buuntsagaan Lake — Full Day at Böön Tsagaan

A complete circuit of the lake's best corners — tern colonies, shorebird flats and raptor ridges — with time to simply sit and let the waterbird spectacle wheel past.

Day 12|Khukh Lake — Climbing to the Khangai

Drive 3–4 hrs

North into the Khangai foothills, where Khukh Lake sits in high steppe. Whooper swans and bar-headed geese breed here; the surrounding ridges add lammergeier and eagles.

Day 13|Khukh Lake — High Steppe Birding

A full day around the lake and its feeder streams — hill pigeons at the cliffs, citrine wagtails in the marsh, and the constant song of larks over everything.

Day 14|Khukh Lake — The Last Field Day

Drive 3–4 hrs

A final morning at the lake before the drive south toward Bayankhongor — with birding stops wherever the country demands them.

Day 15|Bayankhongor — Provincial Interlude

A relaxed day in and around Bayankhongor: riverine willows for late migrants, and the small pleasures of a Mongolian provincial town after two weeks afield.

Day 16|Fly Ulaanbaatar — Return to the Capital

Fly 1 hr

The morning flight returns you to Ulaanbaatar for the final checklist session and a farewell dinner.

Day 17|Fly Home — Departure

Airport transfer, 1 hr

Breakfast and airport transfer — the classic circuit complete.
