Drive from Ulaanbaatar
Leaving Ulaanbaatar, the road runs east until the horizon flattens into pure grassland. By evening you reach the expedition's base on the steppe — a first scan of the nearest outcrops before dinner is traditional.
Steppe lodge

A full day working the rock outcrops and marmot towns with the spotters. Pallas's cats here live classic steppe lives — sunning at dawn, hunting voles through the grass, glaring from lookout boulders at anything that moves.

Another dawn with the cats, then the wider steppe: Mongolian gazelle in their thousands in season, demoiselle cranes, steppe eagles and sakers. Evening brings the best light and the best manul activity of the day.
