Overview

A genuine wilderness trek through the twin massifs of Kharkhiraa and Turgen, above the UNESCO-listed Uvs basin. Seven consecutive trekking days link the Yamaat Valley, the Erees Pass and its 108-lake panorama, the tri-coloured lakes of Rashaany Am, the Kharkhiraa Pass and the great river confluences — wildflower meadows, glacier views and snow leopard country all the way.

Day 2|Ulaangom & Uvs LakeThe Ancient Lake

Fly 3 hrs, then drive 1–2 hrs

Fly three hours west and transfer to the shore of Uvs Lake for an easy warm-up hike along the coastline — delta, open water and snow mountains in one view.

Day 3|Tel Mod, Yamaat ValleyCamp Among the Petroglyphs

Drive 3–4 hrs

Drive into the Yamaat Valley and pitch camp on the river's grassy bank, wandering to petroglyphs and burial mounds beneath the forested slopes.

Day 4|Mustiin AmThe Trek Begins

Ten kilometres up the river valley through wildflowers and big-mountain views — eyes open for ibex on the slopes and the tracks of the cats that follow them.

Day 5|Ereesiin DavaaPass of the 108 Lakes

Fourteen kilometres to the Erees Pass, steep at the last — and then the reveal: a valley floor scattered with 108 lakes beneath the twin peaks of Kharkhiraa and Turgen.

Day 6|Rashaany AmThree Colours of Water

Fifteen kilometres through the lake valley to camp by the green lake of Rashaany Am — its sisters yellow and glacier-red above, with an optional push to the ice.

Day 7|Kharkhiraan DavaaThe High Crossing

Over the Kharkhiraa Pass beneath the Twin Peaks: rock-strewn slopes, high meadows, and the flowers and birds found only above 2,500 metres.

Day 8|Khoroony EhenThe Confluence

Seventeen kilometres down-valley to where the Khoroo meets the Kharkhiraa, with an evening visit to a nomadic family's home.

Day 9|Turgenii BelchirTwo Rushing Rivers

Another seventeen-kilometre day down the dramatic Kharkhiraa valley to the meeting of two white rivers.

Day 10|Khukh NuurThe Blue Lake

The final trek — thirteen kilometres over meadow and moraine to Khukh Nuur, where the drivers wait with khorkhog: mutton cooked on hot stones, the trekker's reward.

Drive 2–3 hrs

A ger camp night to unwind trek-worn muscles, with Mongolian brandy at the camp restaurant and the massif you crossed on the skyline.

Day 12|Ulaangom & Ulaan UulThe Chandmani Culture

Drive 2–3 hrs

To Ulaangom via the Ulaan Uul burial grounds — the 'Chandmani culture' of the seventh to third centuries BCE — and a well-earned hotel night.
